Primal Blueprint Day 13 - Tweeking

Saturday is grocery shopping day.  In tomorrow's post I'll show everything I bought.  This morning I was thinking about what needs to be changed for the coming week.  As I said in the last post, I'd like to find a substitute for the half&half I'm putting in my iced coffee every morning.  It's almost zero in carbs, but it's high in calories.  I had coconut milk on my shopping list for a recipe and I started wondering if that could be my substitute.  I haven't tried it yet; I'll do so tomorrow morning.  I'll report back on it in my next post.

As for exercise, I'm not making any changes there because I think I'm doing great with my weight workouts in the mornings and getting in 30 minutes of either my step or walking outside in the evenings.  Hopefully cutting back on the dairy will make a difference in the weight loss.

As for meals today; I really only ate one meal, twice.  I picked up some fried chicken at the grocery store and I had the …

Shampoos and Conditioners - What I'm Using and What I Think

Right now I'm rotating four sets of shampoo/conditioner sets.  Three are high end and one is a drugstore brand.

The drugstore brand is the John Frieda Sheer Blonde line.  These products are supposed to activate highlights and gradually lighten hair.  I don't use them more than once a week so I don't think they are lightening my hair, but I do think they help keep my hair from being brassy.  I like them a lot and these are my second container of each.  Both have a floral scent.  My hair feels clean but not stripped after use.  I would recommend both.

One of my other high end sets is getting low so I thought I'd look for something to replace them.  I wanted to try something different so see if there are other brands that I'd like just as much.  So, when I saw the Fresh Seaberry Revitalizing shampoo and conditioner on the Nordstrom website, I bought both.  I have tried Fresh moisturizers and lip conditioners and I like the brand a lot.  After using this set one time I…

Weekend Shopping - What I Bought

I went to Walmart looking for two things specifically and I left with three so I did pretty good.  I looked at the Lee shorts and picked out a pair.  I love these because they go with almost any top and look cute.  These will be great for the summer.

This large Pioneer Woman glass handled mason jar with a lid and straw was on my list.  I've been drinking iced coffee every morning and I needed something to put it in. This holds 32 oz. and it has a lid .  I have a cat that will drink anything, including coffee, so I have to have lids for everything I drink out of.  I love this.  It's cute and functional; perfect.
Here it is filled with unsweetened coconut water and ice; one of my favorite drinks. The third item is a repurchase.  The PlusWhite 5 Minute Speed Whitening System is what I've been using to keep my teeth white for years.  I top my toothpaste with it at night and I use it alone in the mornings.  It really works, it's simple to use and it very inexpensive.

Day 12 Primal Blueprint Challenge - Wrapping Up Another Week

I weighed myself this morning.  I'm down one more pound.  At this rate it's going to be several more weeks before I begin to see any difference in how my clothing fits.  I guess in the long run it's better to loose the weight slowly, but right now It's disappointing.

I did much better with exercise this week so I'll just try to keep doing what I'm doing with that.  I am going to go back to eating very simply for next week.  No recipes.  Just simple, lean meats, veggies and fruits.  I would like to come up with a substitute for the half&half that I use in my coffee in the mornings, but I don't have one and I can't go without coffee and I can't drink it black.
Overall I'm proud of myself.  I stuck to the plan and I increased my exercise.  I did my best and that all I can ask of myself.

As for food.  This morning it was time for two fried eggs.  I put a little cream cheese on top and it was really good.

For lunch I had my tamale chicken t…

Primal Blueprint Day 11 - Thinking About the Weekend

I pulled something in my right shoulder last week so I'm still only doing my upper body weights once a week and even then I'm going very light.  Today I skipped it altogether because my shoulder was hurting during the night.  But, as soon as I got home from work I got out my step and did 30 minutes on it.

I couldn't face eggs this morning so I had plain yogurt and frozen blueberries.  It didn't tide me over till lunch though.  I got hungry about 11 am.  I didn't have time to snack so I just toughed it until I ate my lunch of chicken, cauliflower and blackberries.

For dinner I had some of the beef mixture from the lettuce wrap recipe.  I shredded the lettuce and put the meat on top and ate it like a taco salad.

Now I'm sipping on a frozen strawberry smoothie.

I'm thinking about the weekend and how long it is going to seem.  I think I'll dig into my new cookbook tonight and come up with some good stuff to fix tomorrow night to have for the weekend.

Primal Blueprint Quick & Easy Meals Cookbook

I made five primal blueprint recipes this last weekend.  I talk about them in one of my earlier posts.  They turned out so well that I ordered the cookbook.

This cookbook has 222 pages.  Every other page is photos of the recipe.

The recipes I've tried I loved and I can't wait to dig into this cookbook.  As I work my way through it I'll post recipes, photos and my thoughts.

Primal Blueprint Day 10 - Staying the Course

For me, this week is all about staying the course.  I'm in to a routine with my diet and exercise this week.  I got up, worked out with my weights and ate my breakfast.

This morning I changed it up.  I noticed that I had some cream cheese in the fridge, so I rolled up two pieces of chicken breast with a slice of provolone cheese.  Then I topped both with the cream cheese.  It was really good and filling.  I didn't get hungry until maybe noon and I eat lunch at 1 pm.

With that I had my big glass of iced coffee; 1 cup coffee, 1 cup half & half and then I fill the big glass to the top with ice.  I love it and it gets me going in the mornings.

Then it's off to work.  I wish that I had the option of standing at my desk, but alas I don't.  I'm up and down all day long, but it's not enough to make any difference.

Once home I quickly changed into my workout duds and got out the step.  I did 30 minutes on it and I plan to take a 20 minute stroll around my block late…

Primal Blue Print Day 9 - The Food is Too Good

I worked out my arms with my weight this morning.  I pulled something so I used lighter weights today.  Then I had my two fried eggs this morning.  It's the only way I can eat them.  I love scrambled eggs, but only with grits or home fries.  There's aren't a lot of breakfast options on low carb eating, so I picked two things that I know I can eat on a regular basis.  Skipping breakfast isn't an option because I don't have time for snacking once I get to work and I don't usually eat lunch until at least 1:30 pm.  So I've been rotating yogurt and frozen fruit one morning and two fried eggs the next.
For lunch I had my pre-fixed meal of tamale chicken tenders, cauliflower casserole and blackberries; so good.  The recipes are in the previous post.  It's just enough food and the recipes turned out to be so good. When I got home I fixed the strawberry smoothie:  1 cup milk, 1 cup water, two cups frozen strawberries.  Blend for 1 minute.  I took it with me dow…

Primal Blueprint Recipes

I made five low carb recipes for the week:

Tamale Chicken Tenders
In a large casserole dish lay out 2 pounds of chicken tenders.  Spread two small cans of diced green chiles over the chicken.  Pour 1-2 cans of tamale sauce over chicken.  Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes.  To serve, remove chicken from sauce, plate, cover with cheddar.

Broccoli Casserole
Cut up two heads of broccoli.  Boil them until just tender.  Put into large casserole pan.  In a bowl, wisk two eggs, two Tbl. coconut flour and 1 cup half & half.  Pour over broccoli.  Top with parmesan and mozzarella cheese.  Bake at 400 for 40 minutes, until cheese is browned.

Roasted Carrot Sticks
Put two pounds of carrot sticks into a large Ziploc bag.  Pour in some olive oil and salt and pepper.  Spread carrots onto large flat pan.  Roast at 450 for 30 minutes or until carrots are tender.

Beef Lettuce Wraps
Brown two pounds ground beef; drain and set aside.  In large bowl put one bag of cole slaw mix, two yellow bell pepper…

Primal Blueprint 21 Day Transformation - Day 8

I'm in the groove now!  My day has gone like this:

Worked out with weights first thing in the morning
Had large glass of iced coffee/half&half
Plain yogurt & frozen blueberries for breakfast

Tamale chicken tenders
Broccoli casserole
Flavored water for lunch

Did 30 minutes on my step when I got home

Beef lettuce wraps for dinner
Large glass of lemon water to sip the rest of the night

It doesn't get any better than this.  I haven't been hungry at all and I feel great.  Tomorrow I will weigh myself to see if I've lost any weight.  I will admit that over the weekend I did weigh and at that point I'd lost one pound.  Not much, but it's downward motion and that's what it's all about.

In my next post I'll share the recipes I fixed yesterday.

Day 7 Primal Blueprint - A Day of Cooking

It's 9 pm and I just realized that I hadn't done my journal entry for today.

Today I took all the ingredients that I showed in yesterday's post and made up the dishes that I'm taking for my lunches all week and what I'll eat in the evenings when I get home.  Because of the time, I'll post photos and recipes in tomorrow's post.

This was a successful weekend.  I was concerned that I would go off the diet, but I didn't.  I wish I had gotten more exercise, but I never ate anything that was off limits.

As I think about the week to come I know that I will do better with exercise than I did in week one.  Now that I have a good handle on what to eat I won't have to spend time thinking about that this week.

I ordered a Primal Blueprint cookbook that will arrive on Thursday.  I'm looking forward to seeing what's in it.  The recipes I'll share tomorrow came from the Primal website.

Primal Blueprint Day 6 - Grocery Shopping

I did as I said in yesterday's post; I slept in late, had a breakfast of three small fried eggs and a big glass of coffee/half-n-half/ice, made my grocery list and set off.

Here's what I bought.  I know that I will go back tomorrow for more fruit and I plan to shop again on Wednesday for fruit again.  Fruit just doesn't last here because of the heat/humidity.  So, I'm just going to make it a habit to shop several times a week just for fresh fruit.

Strawberries, grapes, blackberries
MILK, DAIRY AND CHEESE whole milk, half & half, sour cream, cottage cheese, plain yogurt, cream cheese, eggs, cheddar, provolone, parmesean
MEAT ground beef, chicken tenderloins, lunch meats; roast beef and chicken breast
VEGETABLES lettuce, cauliflower, tomatoes, avocados, cabbage
NUTS pistachios and macadamia nuts
PANTRY ITEMS enchilada sauce, red curry paste, hoisin sauce, chopped green chiles, coffee, sliced olives, parsley, Italian seasonings

Day Five Primal Blueprint - Dreading the Weekend

The weekends are my splurging days.  I take my lunch to work all week and I look forward to eating out on the weekends.  So I know this first weekend of this diet is going to be challenging.  It already is.

I'm way off the plan already.  I haven't eaten anything that I shouldn't, but I did sleep in this morning and totally skipped my weights.  Then when I got home tonight I had a big bowl of squash/zucchini covered in cheese.  I should have skipped the cheese.  It's definitely low carb, but it was too many calories on a day when I didn't exercise.  I also had two squares of dark chocolate instead of one.

So I'm feeling very sucky right now.  I plan to sleep in tomorrow and stick like glue to very low carb eating.  I also plan to do my long distance walk/hike tomorrow.  We have lots of great places to hike here in Central Florida.  I'm thinking that after today I'll be very motivated to be good for the weekend; we'll see.
